Summary: | Effective logistics, or supply chain management, will bring tangible improvements to businesses, including the following: 1. improved customer service, 2. minimization of stocks at all stages in the chain, 3. no stockouts, and 4. a lower total cost to the business. The change from segmented transport management to logistics management has produced trends which dominate the way logistics develops and influence the way in which logistics managers conduct their business with the providers of services. The evolution of logistics in the UK is traced through the presentation of evidence of the changes that have taken place. The changes have led, over the past decade, to new distribution maps in the UK. Five UK companies were asked what they felt were the outstanding issues confronting them when they seek to decide whether they would consider switching traffic to an integrated system. Their responses, concerning technology, service criteria, pricing, and confidence, are discussed. Europe is the biggest growth area for all the respondents. |
