Description
Summary:As national security professionals who have spent much of their lives working on oceans and security issues, the authors believe that Senate advice and consent to ratification of the Law of the Sea Conventions is strongly in the national interest of the US. The most compelling reasons that support US adherence to the Convention are rooted in restoring US oceans leadership, protecting national interests and enhancing US foreign policy. Arguments against the convention are, in a way, a denigration of law; they seem to indicate that any international agreement is an unwelcome infringement of US sovereignty, when the contrary is the case. Here are some myths advanced against the convention: 1. The US is giving up sovereignty to a new international authority that will control the oceans. 2. US adherence to the convention is not necessary because navigational freedoms are not threatened. 3. The convention mandates a tribunal to adjudicate the ocean disputes of the US.
