Summary:Sir John Hrothgar Habakkuk made an important contribution to British and economic history, partly because he was always good and instructive company. He spent two years as visiting professor in the US, 1954-1955 at Harvard and 1962-1963 at the University of California in Berkeley. Additionally, he was named chairman of the Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals of the Universities in UK in 1967-1977, president of the Royal Historical Society from 1976-1980, and a member of the Social Science Research Council.
