Refractive index and dielectric measurements of B+ implanted PET in the mid-infrared region

Refractive indices, extinction coefficients and dielectric properties of B+ implanted polyethylene terephthalate (PET) have been measured for the mid-infrared wavelength region. PET specimens were implanted with 50 keV boron ions in the fluence range of 1×1015- 5×1016 ions cm−2. The change in refrac...

Description
Summary:Refractive indices, extinction coefficients and dielectric properties of B+ implanted polyethylene terephthalate (PET) have been measured for the mid-infrared wavelength region. PET specimens were implanted with 50 keV boron ions in the fluence range of 1×1015- 5×1016 ions cm−2. The change in refractive index and extinction coefficient values due to ion implantation has been studied by specular reflectance Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic technique. Using refractive index and extinction coefficient values dielectric constant has also been find out in THz frequency region. Furthermore, structural modification in ion implanted matrix has been observed by FTIR transmission spectra. The intensity of characteristics bands observed in FTIR spectra of implanted specimens show a remarkable decline compared to virgin specimen pointing towards structural rearrangements. The possible correlation between the changes observed in optical constant values and structural modification have been discussed. The modified ion implanted PET polymer allows fabrication of optical waveguides and filters etc. in IR range of wavelength.
