Summary: | This article explores the situation and livelihood of displaced young women living with disabilities in Mandela displaced camp in January 2018. Mandela area is located in southern Khartoum. The camp is poor outskirt inhibited by displaced persons who were recently transferred from Nuba Mountain due to the war in that area. Qualitative techniques were utilized to trace 10 young women with disabilities using snowball sampling techniques. In-depth interviews were used to collect data form the target women. The total number of interviewee women was ten; the majority of whom are less than 25 years old. The researchers found out that disability affected the life of these young women due to several factors including: The stigma associated with disabilities, difficulty to access transportation, interaction with community and difficulties to meet the basic needs of this vulnerable group. Young women interviewed identify different types of discrimination they faced as disabled young displaced women. The study concluded that Women experience a higher prevalence of disability world-wide, and women with disabilities remain among the most marginalized, vulnerable members of society. Disabled women face obstacles and challenges arising from the triple barriers of gender displacement and disability. It is clear that there is a need for support for these women and girls in terms of rights, protections and needs. The study recommended additional training and workshops to generate income for the disability centers by the ministry of social welfare. Further studies on people with disabilities are needed to identify the needs and the obstacles of disable person. |
