Summary:Douglas and Hopson examine the intricate value system of the black church and the implications of that system in regard to social justice responses. Notwithstanding the various tensions that have been recognized within the black church as social and religious institution, they suggest that it possesses a fundamentally dichotomous character, which produces any number of tension at any given time but is nevertheless dynamic and conserving. A discussion of the issue of homosexuality that reveals a serious disjunction between core and contingent values is presented.
