Summary: | Dr Balon makes several interesting and important speculations regarding our brief report (Opbroek et al., 2002) on emotional blunting with serotonergic antidepressants. Because of the preliminary nature of the work, there are many important questions that remain unanswered and hopefully our report will stimulate more research on emotion regulation in depression and during antidepressant treatment. In spite of the obvious importance of emotion regulation to depression and the theoretical ways in which antidepressant drugs might differ in their effects on emotion, little systematic work has been performed. Dr Balon raises several methodological questions in a rhetorical fashion. It is obvious that future studies need to grapple with issues of measurement, validity, and specificity. The tools employed in our initial study deserve to be formally validated and tested and new measures are likely to be required before the methodological questions raised can be addressed. |
