Summary: | Rhodes presents an obituary for Stephen Jay Gould, who died in May 2002 after losing his second battle with cancer. Gould has produced nearly a thousand scientific papers, and is remembered best as a gifted essayist, whose column "This View of Life," graced the pages of "Natural History Magazine" for some twenty-five years and provided the grist of many of his popular books. In 1981, he won a National Book Award in science for "The Panda's Thumb," and a decade later he won the Rhone-Poulenc Prize and was a Pulitzer Prize finalist for "Wonderful Life: The Burgess Shale and the Nature of History." |
