Summary: | Farkas talks about the filk. Filk music--a combination of folk and the science fiction, fantasy, and/or horror genres--has been around since the 1950s. The prehistory of filk, however, extends back even further. In 1937, after a schism in the Greater New York Science Fiction Club, a new group of SF aficionados formed: The Futurians. Originally, The Futurians were just fans of science fiction, though later many of them would become writers and editors. Two members who would become authors, Frederik Pohl and Cyril Kornbluth, also penned protest songs that used tropes from their preferred genre. These tunes, which at the time had no specific classification, would inspire and influence the music that's now called filk. |
