Description
Summary:Self-determination is not only a set of skills but a modus vivendi (i.e., lifestyle) that empowers young people with disabilities to "act as the primary causal agent in one's life." In this article, the author describes how the self-determined modus vivendi increases success for young people with disabilities. He does this by examining the relationship between his own experiences and the findings of several articles on self-determination. Although he believes research is still needed to promote and enhance one's understanding on self-determination skills, he has concluded from the studies he reviewed and from his own personal experiences that self-determination skills are critical for success. Therefore, he strongly urges others to give young people with disabilities the training and ability to change their own life, as he has done.
