The number of employees using back belts in an attempt to prevent injuries while performing occupational tasks has increased dramatically during the past several years. 1,2 Controversy has accompanied this increased use of back belts because neither the mechanism of injury prevention nor the efficacy of back belts for injury prevention has been established. 1
The purpose of this brief review is to focus on devices used as personal protective equipment for the prevention of low back injuries in occupational settings. Orthotic supports prescribed for therapeutic purposes are not specifically included in this review. Much of the literature, however, examines a variety of low back support devices, including devices considered to be used for therapeutic purposes. This review, therefore, includes information concerning the biomechanical aspects of a variety of low back supports, both those intended as personal protective equipment and those prescribed for therapeutic purposes.
