Summary:This paper explores the use of learning management systems (LMS) at colleges and universities in the United States of America. The study explores which systems are in use including both commercial and self-developed systems. The findings are based upon a random sample of 100 of the approximately 2,000 institutions of higher learning in the United States. The findings on this study indicated that the most popular LMS used at colleges and universities in the United States was Blackboard. The second most used system was WebCT. This paper reports the first phase of an ongoing study about the use of learning management systems for higher education in the United States. The researchers intend to further explore how these systems are used for teaching and learning, why particular systems are adopted, and how systems are presented to both faculty and students. The study also showed that many schools clearly indicate on their institution website their online course offerings and how courses are delivered. However, many schools in this study had very little information about their online courses on their websites. A few schools in the study used multiple systems where there information technology systems entailed more than one LMS. (Contains 1 table and 3 figures.)
