Summary: | Group sex composition is found to be positively related to team performance in a business school case competition by analyzing data from 34 practitioner judges' ratings of 37 student teams. In several multiple regression equations, the effects of sex composition are investigated, controlling for such variables as average team GPA, aggregate team work experience, team size, and team coaching received, among others. In addition, factor and other psychometric analyses of the dependent variable (e.g., coefficient alpha reliability of .92) were conducted. The sex-composition findings are congruent with the small-group literature on diversity and with the assumption of sex differences in cognition and communication (i.e. evolutionary theory). As a secondary objective, a self-developed, generic performance-rating instrument is presented as a useful assessment tool for case competitions. |
