Summary: | •A new system based on image processing was introduced to measure contact area.•The tire contact area were dynamically monitored by pouring white liquid.•Contact and non-contact areas were made separable using an appropriate processing.•Real time assessment of dynamic contact area was accomplished.
Contact area is an important criterion to evaluate road and off-road vehicles performance. Previous researches have measured and investigated the static aspect of the contact area. In this research, a novel system is presented to dynamically measure this criterion. A metal box with a glass surface is employed and a white liquid is poured on the glass. A digital camera is also placed under the box, which captures a video when the tire passes over it. Frames of the video are segmented into ‘touching’ and ‘non-touching’ regions by using appropriate pre-processing, thresholding, and post-processing techniques. The area of touching regions is automatically measured. Experiments revealed that the proposed system is a precision instrument for real-time measurement of the dynamic contact area. |
