Summary: | An abstract of a paper on "Globalisation, EMU and International Trade Union Co-operation," delivered at the 1999 Employment Research Unit Annual Conference in Cardiff, Wales, is presented. The study argues that globalization and EMU not only have cost-decreasing effects in the product market, but also in the labor market, by making international trade union co-operation less costly. In the sense that EMU, through increased transparency etc., lowers the barriers for European co-ordination among labor unions, this would imply that increased European coordination of labor unions operating in the same sector should be seen. The conclusions derived from the model are the following: for t being high enough, unions act as competitors on the labor market and are therefore obliged to moderate their wage demands. Below a threshold value of t, it becomes attractive for unions to co-operate, causing a positive jump in the wage level. |
