Summary:Aim: To understand the obstacle to consult a psychiatrist in general hospital in the perspective of non-psychiatrist physicians. Methods: An online survey was generated to physicians who worked in general hospital. Results: There were 132 respondents who filled the survey. There were 84 respondents (63.6%) were in the age of 24-30 years old and 26 respondents (19.7%) were in the age of 30-45 years old. Sixty-nine respondents (52.3%) had 1 to 5 years length of works in the general hospital. There were 91 respondents (71.7%) said that the obstacle to consult a psychiatrist in the general hospital was patient refuse to be consulted to a psychiatrist followed by the fact that there was no psychiatrist in charge in the hospital in 43 respondents (36.3%). Twenty-four respondents (18.8%) said they were afraid that it caused extra expense for the patients. There were 15 physicians (11.7%) said that they did not recognize the symptoms of mental health problems. The respondents said that there were 7 specific medical conditions that usually needed psychiatric consultation, they were: Psychosomatic problems, Dyspepsia, Headache, Head Trauma, Insomnia, Cancer and chronic diseases. Anxiety and depression were the most symptoms (64.4%, 62.2% respectively) that the physicians saw in their medical diseases patients that needed a psychiatric consultation. Conclusion: Psychiatric conditions in medical illness: Anxiety, Depression, Psychotic features. We need further education to colleagues and lay people about the psychiatric condition in medical illness, it may increase the number of referrals and reducing the stigma of mental health condition among patients as well.
