Description
Summary:In a manner reminiscent of the fast-paced style of the booming metropolis, they engaged in a whirlwind of activities that included settlements, municipal reform, child protection, social insurance, civil rights, and the Progressive party Painstakingly leafing through minutes and records, Recchiuti is at his best when he uncovers the interlocked nature of progressivism and its settings, from the bustle of the United Charities Building to the cultivated salon of Lillian Wald's Henry Street Settlement. Recchiuti does elucidate the core tensions within progressivism, in particular between democratic impulses and elitism, uplift and social control, racism and civil rights activism, and regulatory and transformative concepts of state intervention. [...]the book offers few new interpretive insights for the expert and not enough context for the uninitiated reader.
