Description
Summary:Customs efficiency has a significant impact on reducing the cost associated with trade and business performance management, so a close link between competitiveness in international trade and customs can be identified (Shujie & Zhao, 2009). A poorly efficiency in customs administration may indeed affect the improvements that have been made in other areas related to international trade (De Wulf & Sokol, 2009). However, the study of efficiency on the public sector is always more complex than the study of efficiency in the private, profit-oriented sector. Due to the measurement of efficiency in public services implies a bigger effort in the identification of relevant outputs and inputs. The aim of this research is focused on determining the relative efficiency of countries customs as a key of international trade considering four inputs and three outputs for 29 countries through the data envelopment analysis (DEA) bootstrap approach of Simar and Wilson (2000) and the original DEA. The estimated results show that average efficiency DEA scores decrease when the bootstrapping method is applied, therefore this paper reinforces the fact that the DEA double bootstrap model is more superior to the traditional DEA model in estimating the efficiency scores of the efficiency of the customs.
