Summary: | The DVD is not merely a digital recording of a film. Through the transfer process and the addition of supplementary materials, the DVD becomes a reconstruction of a particular movie. In this respect, the director commentary track provides the most interesting reconstruction of a film and actually constitutes a distinctly new text. Director commentaries - such as those by Paul Verhoeven for his "Robocop," Steven Soderberg for his "The Limey," and Sam Mendes for his "American Beauty," among others - often focus on directorial intentions and open new interpretative possibilities for viewers. As the DVD format becomes more popular and the demand for supplementary materials such as the director commentary increases, philosophical interest in the concept of authorial intention, which has often been neglected in favor of an emphasis on the creation of meaning by consumers, may also increase. |
