Summary: | Major historical aspects of the Japanese people reinforce their continued inclination to conform to societal norms at the cost of their own individualism. This unique characteristic of their country, often referred to as a need for dependence versus the need for independence, is examined from a historical perspective. Its ramifications on the successful team-based Japanese management style are identified. Four major areas are discussed in relation to the team concept: 1. rice growing activities (100 BC to present), 2. religious influences (500 BC to present), 3. the Tokugawa Period (1600-1867), and 4. the Meiji Period (1868-1911). |
