Description
Summary:Offers a discussion of "The Gospel at Colonus," an update of Sophocles's classic tragedy "Oedipus at Colonus" which involves a study of the written text as well as the 1988 original cast recording, a videotape of the 1985 Philadelphia production, reviews, and critical articles on the production. Considers the "layers" of influence in the musical which derive from ancient Greek, Christian, and contemporary African-American culture. Offers director and librettist Leo Breuer's description of the play as "an oratorio set in a black Pentecostal service, in which Greek myth replaces Bible story."
