Summary: | In this interview, Salgado talks about the challenges and possibilities of writing a contemporary novel that lays a claim to history at a time when history is sometimes violently contested. Salgado is a novelist and short story writer, as well as a Reader in English at the University of Sussex and author of the ground-breaking study, Writing Sri Lanka: Literature, Resistance and the Politics of Place (2007). She is currently on a Leverhulme Fellowship undertaking research on memorialisation and bearing witness to exceptional violence in contemporary exilic literature. Her collection of stories Broken Jaw was published in June 2019 by The 87 Press. This interview was conducted on 20 December 2018 in Sussex, UK. |
