Summary: | Schiller shares her experience with the Ngaju Dayaks, native peoples in Central Kalimtan Province, specifically in acquiring their traditional religion, Kaharingan, during the conduct of her interview. She expresses that the adherents of Kaharingan ideas about family seem to have remained fairly constant where religious rituals and clues to their conception of family can be found in the importance that they place on kinship terms and the details of genealogies. She describes the Ngaju rituals that the souls of the deceased are invited back to the village for a final visit and are given provisions such as cooked food, and money to carry with them to the afterlife. |
