Summary:This study examines those attributes people perceive to be the best indicators of success in professional baseball. Responses were derived from 811 people using a survey employing a photo-elicitation technique. The findings of the study strongly indicate that more than any other factor, the race or ethnicity of professional baseball players influences people's perceptions of what attributes contribute most to their success. The implications of the findings are discussed with a focus on how they affect social relations and suggestions are offered regarding what might be done to ameliorate the existing disparity in respondent perceptions of factors matter most for black, white, and Latino athletes.
