Description
Summary:Climate change and its issues are some of the biggest challenges facing the world today. These challenges also call for the most urgent responses that humanity can muster. The climate change challenge has manifested itself in some of the direst ways in Nigeria. This include the destruction of biodiversity in the Niger Delta, land degradation and desert encroachment in the North and flooding of most damaging magnitudes across the country. This paper argues that these challenges have snowballed into human security challenges, some of which are threatening the corporate existence of the state. The paper posits that good governance is environmental governance. This is because good governance covers issues of climate and environment as stated in the environment objectives of the Nigeria as state in 1999 constitution (As amended) and some of the policy positions of government. Climate challenges will push Nigerians into further poverty and then more human security challenges such as militancy in Niger Delta and the farmers-herdsmen conflict that straddles the geopolitical zones of the country. The paper concludes that beyond the global environmental politics as seen Nigeria's penchant for attending international summits on environment and adoption of several instruments like Kyoto Protocol and programmatic pretensions such Federal Grazing Reserve Bill, there is need for proper implementation of such instruments and policies.
