Summary: | The components of a successful strategy for local community development organizations to enhance their commercial development efforts are documented. Three special techniques used to improve communication with local business owners and consumers are described. These techniques are: 1. the commercial call program, 2. focus group strategy, and 3. a mystery shopper campaign. A case study of Washington, Iowa, is presented to document the implementation of this proactive strategy. The Chamber of Commerce leaders in Washington, Iowa, spent nearly a year to assess the community's marketable assets and to formulate a plan for growth. This process led to certification in Iowa's Community Economic Preparedness Program. |
