Summary:A survey conducted by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources to study the feasibility of reestablishing a population of wild elk in southern Illinois found that the citizens within the potential release area were divided on the issue . Using the results of the habitat study and the public opinion survey, the Department decided not to attempt an elk reintroduction in southern Illinois at that time.
