Description
Summary:Previous progress of antiretroviral HIV prevention efforts focusing on preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and treatment as prevention (TasP) has plateaued in recent years. Until prevention efforts expand, nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis (nPEP) is another antiretroviral intervention that people can use after a potential HIV exposure to reduce their risk of infection and should be offered in outpatient settings as a way to prevent new HIV infections and bridge people to future prevention, like PrEP. The purpose of this article is to equip nurse practitioners with the information to develop a practice-level program to deliver nPEP to patients in need of urgent HIV prevention. •HIV prevention progress has stalled in recent years.•Nonoccupational postexposure prophylaxis (nPEP) should be provided in outpatient settings for urgent HIV prevention.•Nurse practitioners are positioned to lead practice-level program development to deliver nPEP.•nPEP delivery is a multistep process requiring interdisciplinary collaboration.•Access to nPEP can be a gateway to future prevention (eg, preexposure prophylaxis, health promotion).
