Public Opinion Perception on e-Government: The Case of Northern Cyprus

Online life has now become an indispensable for both individuals, and the public and private sector as well as civil society organizations, particularly in developed countries. In fact, e-life has started to have the same level of importance in developing countries. Each individual, institution, firm and country is gradually trying to transfer all data and processes onto the online arena. When the idea of starting to transfer governmental processes into electronic spaces is considered, the e-government concept frequently comes to mind. On this basis, the focus of the study is to understand the public opinion perception of e-government in Northern Cyprus. Although Northern Cyprus is a country that is not recognized around the world, it is attempting to stay up to date with technological changes to the same extent as other developing countries. The e-government issue is one of the ways in which improvements are made to society through webbased technologies. E-government is a new concept in Northern Cyprus that has experienced minimal expansion. In this study, an attempt has been made to determine the perception of the public on this area by using the face-to-face in-depth interview method with 20 people living in Northern Cyprus. Furthermore, electronic newspaper archives have been investigated to understand the role that media usage plays in the process of information distribution by government, on the basis of 'e-government'. According to the research findings, it seems that residents in Northern Cyprus are well informed about e-government. As a result, the issues surrounding e-government should be managed more effectively by public administrators.
