Summary:The features of fatigue crack nucleation and initiation in prismatic samples with a sharp Charpy-type notch made of the EP679 steel during multicycle fatigue tests are studied. Using speckle images, it is shown that, before a crack starts at the notch top, a zone of plastic deformation appears, with a shape depending on the material aging temperature. The dependences of the crack length on the number of loading cycles obtained immediately after the crack start are given.
