Description
Summary:In summary, the essence of the book details how the town of Cairo, Illinois was founded and developed and how that development led to its importance in establishing a western and southern military outpost during the Civil War. [...]the book reveals how after a number of failed attempts and political wrangling over the city's purpose, General Ulysses S. Grant-with support of the Union army-was able to impose an order on the city that would have far ranging implications not only for the overall strategy of the Union in the Civil War, but also for strategies involving the treatment of southerners and slaves after the Civil War. The addition of theoretical models and/or specific citations from journals and memoirs that discuss how women, slaves, westerners, and people of other nations viewed the city of Cairo would have helped to fill out the depth of how the Civil War was transformative not only at the national level but also for peoples' everyday lives.
