Description
Summary:Buoyant plumes are important in a wide variety of engineering and geophysical contexts, particularly with respect to air quality and pollution considerations. They have been studied extensively both with and without the effects of a cross-flow in the ambient atmosphere. A fully comprehensible nonhydrostatic numerical model was used to investigate how plumes arising from intense heat sources at the surface interact with a cross-flow having vertical shear near the ground. As a result, plumes associated with circular heat sources in the presence of a cross-flow exhibit several interesting features, but are dominated by an embedded counter-rotating vortex pair.
