Summary: | The level of detail is truly impressive and will allow researchers any number of potential topics on which to write: the age range of the accused, the balance between men and women, the towns and villages they came from, their occupations, their family ties. Of particular interest is the 'Breve do Perdão Geral' of 1604 (a general pardon for the New Christians of Portugal in exchange for large sums of money paid over to the King (1,800,000 cruzados), the Duke of Lerma (50,000 cruzados), D. Juan de Borja, President of the Council of Portugal in Madrid (40,000 cruzados), Fernão de Matos, Secretary to the Council (30,000 cruzados)), and the fact that at the time it was promulgated there were 70 men and 85 women in the Inquisition's prisons in Lisbon alone awaiting trial. Both volumes are completed with very helpful indices of names, place names and descriptions, but again, a small caveat: how much easier it would be for the researcher to navigate through this mass of information if it were available in electronic form. |
