Summary:In other parts of the country, people attempt to categorize the music: gospel, blues, jazz. So, black people created benevolent societies that provided services to the black community. A few years back, I published on the cover of Callaloo one of Harold Baquet's painted photographs of a brass band performing a jazz funeral. A lot of people from here have gone to Africa and have seen very similar things-the umbrellas and the dance steps and they body movements, the body language. On a Sunday afternoon, we hire classic New Orleans jazz bands, the best in town, and offer a free show.
