Summary:When a neurologist called Freud presented his findings on hysteria in 1895, his suggestion that it was caused by childhood sexual trauma met with angry disbelief among his colleagues. Over the next ten years he decided that the traumas must have been fantasies, and proposed a set of psychic mechanisms to explain the creation and subsequent concealment of these fantasies. The rest is history, or rather psychoanalysis.
