Description
Summary:Chapter six shifts to the global context of Black Peru familiar, at least partially, to most readers: the rise of Afro-Peruvian singer Susana Baca as international star of world music through her chance discovery by David Byrne. Feldman positions Baca as a cosmopolitan world music artist on the periphery of the Black Atlantic struggling to come to grips with her status as an Afro-Peruvian culture bearer and with her own creative inclinations. Throughout the book, Feldman balances multiple versions of Afro-Peruvian history with theoretical reflections on the conditions under which they were produced and with archival investigations of the historical trajectories narrated by her informants.
