description An array of data collected in the Institute of Limnology, Russian Academy of Sciences, in the course of studies aimed to evaluate the total water surface areas has been used to compile maps of the total and natural lake area percentages in Russia and to plot the distribution of the average values of these percentages over the latitude. Variations of the lake area percentage and its governing factors over the territory of Russia have been analyzed. This percentage was shown to largely depend on the geological rather than climatic factors. The lake area percentage is commonly higher in the regions that have become free of glacial cover or seawater not long ago (at the geological scale), while within such regions, variations in lake area percentage are determined by differences in the sculptured relief forms. The increase in the lake area percentage in some regions of Russia because of hydroengineering construction has been evaluated.
