Description
Summary:Natural World Heritage is defined as natural sites or precisely delineated natural areas of outstanding universal value from the point of view of science, conservation or natural beauty. Mt. Kumgang in the DPR Korea is a scenic natural area that has been nominated for Natural World Heritage status. In this paper, we present a systematic, comprehensive and comparative analysis of the geoheritage values of Mt. Kumgang according to World Heritage criteria. The aesthetic and geological values of Mt. Kumgang, which are of global importance, are documented. It is concluded that Mt. Kumgang meets World Heritage criteria (vii) and criteria (viii). Mt. Kumgang is the typical representative of the integrated rock–controlled landform with natural beauty in the granite–dominated regions, and has a remarkable landscape diversity, outstanding natural phenomena and exceptional natural beauty. Since Mt. Kumgang is mainly related with granitic terrain that was subject to glacial processes, it stands out as a significant example which reflects the geological processes of an important phase in the Earth’s history. Mt. Kumgang is compared with other mountain World Heritage sites.
