Corrosive Wear of Alumina Particles Reinforced Al–Si Alloy Composites

The aim of the present study is to investigate the corrosive wear behavior of Al–Si alloy-matrix composites reinforced by Al 2 O 3 particles. The composites with 0, 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt % of Al 2 O 3 were fabricated using stir-casting method. The corrosive wear test was carried out in 3.5% NaCl ele...

Description
Summary:The aim of the present study is to investigate the corrosive wear behavior of Al–Si alloy-matrix composites reinforced by Al 2 O 3 particles. The composites with 0, 10, 15, 20, and 25 wt % of Al 2 O 3 were fabricated using stir-casting method. The corrosive wear test was carried out in 3.5% NaCl electrolyte at an indentor reciprocating speed of 10 and 15 cm/s on a corrosive wear machine. The microstructure of the Al‒Si alloy matrix and its composites was characterized using SEM and EDS methods of investigation. It was concluded that the corrosion resistance of Al–Si alloy-matrix composites under corrosive-wear was increased by increasing the weight % of Al 2 O 3 reinforcements and decreased by increasing the sliding speed. Corrosive wear tests revealed that the corrosion potential shifted to the active side as compared with stagnant conditions.
