Description
Summary:This article investigates and problematizes female flânerie/city walking in East German film, discussing three Deutsche Film AG (DEFA) productions through Michel de Certeau's explorations of urban space from The Practice of Everyday Life (1980) and recent expansions thereof. On a second level, in the context of DEFA's so-called 'Alltagsfilme' and 'Frauenfilme', the article analyses female city walking and its relation to the representation of modernist architecture and urban space, focusing on Dietmar Hochmuth's heute abend und morgen früh (1979), Helmut Dziuba's Sabine Kleist, 7 Jahre, and Lothar Warneke's Die Beunruhigung (both 1982).
