Summary: | Moving away from the literature we are comfortable with and introducing contemporary authors like Nic Stone, Erika Sanchez, David Levithan, and Samira Ahmed to our book studies and bookshelves provides students with opportunities to wobble around the issues society is wrestling to understand. Inviting community members from a wide array of perspectives, such as a police officer and a member of Black Lives Matter or a prosecutor and a representative from ACLU, allows students to consider multiple viewpoints. Robyn Seglem is a professor in the School of Teaching and Learning at Illinois State University. |
