Summary: | Citric acid (CA) has not been used yet by the researchers for asphalt binder/mix modification, so it is potentially available worldwide at much lower cost (on the order of 1.25 USD/kg) compared to other common modifiers. In this study, binder properties for various amounts of CA were tested. Furthermore, the mechanical response of stone mastic asphalt (SMA) was also studied. The test results of CA/asphalt binders and mixes were compared with those of control binders and mixes and found to be better than SMA mixes in terms of rutting, moisture and temperature susceptibility. Although flexural strength properties of CA/SMA mixes are lower than SMA mixes, they considered to be acceptable. 2% of CA by weight of asphalt is recommended for enhancement of CA/SMA performance. |
