Summary: | The North Pennines Orefield is a classic example of a fluorine-enriched Mississippi Valley-type ore deposit, and it shares many characteristics with other famous fluorite deposits such as those of southern Illinois in the US. During the past several centuries numerous mines and prospects in the North Pennines have yielded enormous amounts of both lead and, later, fluorite ores. Byproducts of this mining activity were the many well-crystallized specimens of fluorite and other minerals that were found lining cavities in the orebodies. The mineralized deposits of the North Pennines Orefield are located primarily in the Weardale and Teesdale regions of County Durham, extending westward into the Alston Moor and Escarpment regions of Cumbria, northward into the Allendale and Hexham regions of Northumberland, and southward into portions of North Yorkshire England. |
