Summary: | After its publication in 1957, Lawrence Durrell's purportedly non-political book Bitter Lemons, which describes his experiences during the Cypriot struggle for independence from Britain, was met with severe criticism from former Greek and Cypriot friends, who felt it presented a biased representation of the revolt. It also led to a breach of friendship with the Greek poet and Nobel Laureate George Seferis. Up to the present day, to many Cypriot intellectuals Durrell is, if not exactly a persona non grata, at least a very controversial figure. Here, Tournay-Theodotou focuses on the narrative poem by the Anglo-Cypriot poet George Tardios entitled "After the Lemons." |
