Description
Summary:A common threat to rigorous and thought- ful contemporary research is that by the time readers are able to take in the work, the media landscape may not be the same: tools and systems may have disappeared completely (e.g., Vine), user demographics have shifted dramatically (e.g., Facebook), and even the underlying media ethos may have matured beyond initial conceptions (I offer the maturation of "text messaging" here as a medium whose social, emotional, and technological shift has been profound over the last 10 years). Leading the way in the teacher training section is the chapter by Geoff Walton, Mark Childs, Janet Hetherington, and Gordana Jugo in which readers learn about teaching strategies, educational technology, and professional development opportunities in support of teaching with collaborative, creative digital tools. Here, readers might find inspiration for emerging research opportunities in privacy (law and ethics), media production techniques and philosophies, participatory culture, and family relationships. Broadly, Drotner's interview echoes the oft-repeated case for increased deliberate media literacy initiatives that will help a new generation navigate new media, shifting social and societal constructs, social and environmental justice concerns, and the internal cognitive and emotional changes that accompany growing up in such an ecosystem.
