•Frame-shaped samples enable accurate estimation of magnetoelastic characteristics.•Both columns of frame-shaped core should be wound by magnetizing coils.•For each geometry of a frame-shaped sample, magnetic circuit parameters should be determined separately.•The non-uniformity of compressive stress distribution in columns is about 19%.•The influence of heterogeneity of stress distribution is less than 1%.
Frame-shaped samples method is commonly used for testing the magnetoelastic characteristics of bulk soft magnetic materials, such as ferrites or steels. However, unusual shape of such samples limits the accuracy of estimation of magnetic path length as well as efficient magnetic cross-section of the samples carried out accordingly to the IEC 60205:2016standard. Paper presents, how to overcome this drawback with finite elements method. The quality of estimation of magnetic path length and efficient magnetic cross-section of the frame-shaped samples were verified from the point of view of non-linear magnetization characteristics of soft magnetic materials. The results indicate that proper correction of core’s parameters calculated accordingly to the IEC 60205:2016standard enable significant increase of measurements accuracy of soft magnetic materials’ characteristics. |
