Summary: | [...]a perspective allows for positive readings of Orthodox Jewish women as devoting themselves to religious study, displaying rigorous domestic and intellectual knowledge, possessing business acumen, and being active as community members. Literature is the core source for interpretation, although the inclusion of film and music at the end of the monograph adds weight to her argument that Orthodox Jewish women are more accomplished and liberated than traditional popular references allow. [...]Skinazi makes distinctions about the creators she analyzes, identifying gender biases and considering cultural stereotypes regarding a creator's place in or outside Orthodoxy. Orthodox Jewish women are not alone in this negative treatment in popular culture, of course, and Skinazi provides examples in of the same gender biases and stereotypes faced by Muslim women and women who belong to conservative, separatist communities of practice. |
