description Captain John Smith's exploration of North America gave contemporary English readers a new view of the world. His impact on travel, exploration, and colonization is well known, but the extent of his influence on other fields of study has yet to be fully assessed. Here, Hayes conveys that when he compiled his bibliography of secondary literature, Captain John Smith: A Reference Guide, some years ago, he found only a handful of references to Smith during his lifetime. With new ways of accessing early-seventeenth-century texts, more references to Smith from his contemporaries are starting to surface including In Paradisi in sole paradisus terrestris (1629), the English gardening book that set the standard for English gardening books.
