Summary:Atherosclerotic lesions of the brachiocephalic arteries are one of the main causes of death and disability in the world population. The diagnosis of patients with atherosclerotic lesions of the carotid arteries and their division into symptomatic/asymptomatic are described in detail, and recommendations are given for the prevention of such lesions and on the treatment of such patients. The data of national studies forming the optimal indications for the use of one method or another of preventing acute cerebrovascular accidents with stenosis of the internal carotid artery are presented.
