Summary: | The monosyllabic words used in disyllabic modules are an important part of contemporary written Chinese. This article puts forward the concept and criteria of disyllabic modularization for the first time. Taking bi 鼻 and bian 遍 as examples, the process of disyllabic modularization of two kinds of monosyllabic words are examined respectively. In essence, the process of the two types is involved in disyllabic modularization. One process is that a number of monosyllabic words, used in historical Chinese, can be used only in written Chinese but disappeared in spoken Chinese. The other process is that quite a few monosyllabic words, serving as morphemes, can be embedded in spoken the Chinese disyllable model, i.e. a morphemization process. The morphemization of monosyllabic words in spoken Chinese is the necessary path and essential stage of disyllabic modularization. This tentative study explores modern monosyllabic words used in disyllabic modules from a register perspective. Keywords: monosyllabic words, disyllabic modularization, register |
